Samatha Bhavana- Meditation
‘Tranquillity’ serenity is a synonym of samadhi (concentration)cittekagata
(one –pointedness of mind) and avikkhepa (undistractedness). It is one of the mentel factors in wholesome conciusness.11
Tranquillity is an unperturbed, peaceful and lucid stste of mind attained by strong mental concentration. Thoght as a distinct way of practice (samathayanika) it aimes at the attainment of the meditive absorpitons (jhana) a higt degree of tranquil concentration (thought not necessarity that of the absorptions) is indispensable for insight too tranquility frees the mind from impurities and inner obstacles, and gives it greater penettrative strength.
